[2-1/4 hour documentary] Today, the Songhai Empire is all but forgotten by history. But this medieval kingdom was once the most powerful force in Africa.
Find out how this civilization grew up on the fringes of the Sahara Desert, among some of the most extreme conditions that nature can throw at us. Discover how it grew and flourished, passing through a process known as the imperial cycle, and learn about what ultimately caused its sudden and dramatic collapse.
This video is number 7 in a series.

I watched this episode a week or so ago. It’s fascinating.
The entire series - which began as a podcast - is very nicely done. Roman Britain, the Vikings in Greenland, the Khmer Empire, Sumeria, the Mayans... I highly recommend it.
Since I have been “working” from home for the last six months due to COVID, I’ve had the ... ah, opportunity to check out dozens of history documentaries on YouTube.
This is a very good series.

Very cool, thanks for posting. I’m subscribing to the podcast, “Fall of Civilizations.”
Of all the tech advances over last 20 years, the podcast is the greatest!
The Songhai was so interesting, tho, I watched it all the way through! The author has done a really fine job explaining the series of events that caused west Africa to 'crack like an eggshell,' and why Portugal disappeared off the world stage at the height of their own empire, both never to recover.
Feeding the mind sure beats watching re-runs of America's Funniest Bloopers :)
