Novak Djokovic disqualified from 2020 US Open after hitting ball at line judge

Novak Djokovic was defaulted in the fourth round of the 2020 US Open on Sunday after hitting a ball in frustration that struck a line judge on the court at Arthur Ashe Stadium. That line judge was hit in the throat and had to be helped off the court after appearing to have trouble breathing.

Djokovic, a 17-time Grand Slam champion, was disqualified from the tournament. Here are some looks at the incident:

The US Open released this statement shortly after Djokovic was defaulted:

In accordance with the Grand Slam rulebook, following his actions of intentionally hitting a ball dangerously or recklessly within the court, or hitting a ball with negligent disregard of the consequences, the US Open referee defaulted Novak Djokovic from the 2020 US Open. Because he was defaulted, Djokovic will lose all ranking points earned at the US Open and will be fined prize money won at the tournament in addition to any or all fines levied with respect to the offending incident.

The default came after several minutes where Djokovic pleaded his case to tournament officials that he did not intend to hit the line judge. It was the second time he hit a ball in frustration after a point in the first set of his match against Pablo Carreño Busta, and this one came after Busta broke his serve at 5-5. Carreño Busta now moves on to the quarterfinals.

After the match, Carreño Busta told reporters he was stunned by what he saw. "I was in shock, I never expected this moment playing against Novak, he said. "When they [were] talking [at] the net, I just tried to be focused in case we had to continue playing ... I needed to be ready in case we had to continue."

Can somebody help me.

CLASSIC "Learn the rules, play the game." He broke the rules of the game. He intentionally hit a ball which struck a person... the rule is even stated in the article. What's so difficult about it?

I've seen it written that Wal Mart is sued a million times a day...million dollar lawsuits and $200 claims. It's said that regardless of how little money is involved they fight every suit tooth and nail.

Sounds like "tooth and nail" might be called for here.

Gee, why wasn’t the judge wearing a mask and plastic face guard?

And of course, protective netting for the fans. A splintered racquet flying into the stands might cut someone’s jugular.

Am I allowed to say the word, “dick”, on this forum? Djokovic is a dick.

Djokovic had no reason to be upset at the point, as Carreno-Busta had outplayed him on a p== drop shot (am I allowed to suggest that pejorative here?). Djokovic was just playing head games with his opponent, which is what has won him more than a few unearned tournaments.

And he wants to create a competitor players association to the ATP: he just lost that fight today.

Can I say “douchebag” here?

“Is it necessary to have an uncontrollable temper to be a champion?”

“You canNOT be serious!”

Not necessary but not uncommon.

It seems like tennis and basketball players are among the worst (I remember what Kermit Washington did to Rudy Tomjanovich).

My favorite story was in football from Baltimore Colts lineman Art Donovan.

Art Donovan never played for the Rams, but he did play against them. Donovan recalls a tackle for a loss he had against Ram QB Bob Waterfield on first down. Waterfield told Donovan that he was going to get him. Donovan only laughed. Waterfield, after all was a QB, and Donovan was a big defensive lineman, how could Waterfield “get” him?

On the next play, the o lineman blocking Donovan stepped out of the way. This was Donovan’s big chance. He made a beeline for Waterfield. Waterfield DRILLED the football directly into Donovan’s face. No face guards in those days, either! From that moment on, Donovan could only respect a man who would spend a down to settle a score.

Whats so difficult, is that I see players do that in every single match. Every one! Next time, you watch a match and see if players don’t hit balls back to the back wall. Normally they do this without looking. Players do that hundreds of times. And all players do it. This judge was talking in the middle of the back area and not paying attention to what was going on, on the court. She was out of position. She is taught to always be aware and protect herself.

I challenge you to identify someone in all of sports any more classy than Roger Federer.

The tempers show in Tennis because they are all alone on the court. The bad ones REALLY stand out.

Two come to mind, Gil Hodges, the Hall of Fame first baseman who was so decent he was serious put up as a candidate for canonization.

Also, Lee Trevino, who called a penalty on himself in a golf tournament for giving advice to another player. SOme other golfer called a penalty on himself for using a ball with the wrong markings on it, even though it was otherwise a perfectl;y good ball. That cost him a tournament.

I didn't mean to say that all tennis players are horrible, just that they can be awfully bad, and I suspect they can fight for real, unlike baseball players.

He’s a foreigner? From the Baltic States? Maybe he took the phrase “Grand Slam” a little differently.
