I am going to say the Manager is full of BS on this one. Havelock or Havenot NC, as it has been and is still called since I was first stationed there in 1977, is a military town. Without MCAS Cherry Point it would be a sleepy little town that even Google Earth would miss on a map. Those not in the military work for the DOD, provide services for the military or are retirees. Now, who in that town would complain about an American flag? If the military stopped going to that Food Lion it would be out of business in a few months.

Food Lion is in a battle with Walmart, Lowes, Aldis and Publixs. When I first arrived in Eastern NC it was just Food Lion, Piggly Wiggly and a few privately owned supermarkets in smaller towns. Walmart in the nearby larger towns and cities, Eastern NC is turning into one large bedroom community. New housing is everywhere. Consequently Food Lion is under pressure from competitors even in small towns. Alienating the military in a military town ain't good business.

Food Lion is part of Ahold Delhaize, a 19B€
Europe based concern. In this failed Chynese
bioweapon era their numbers are good.

I find in general their subsidiary stores to be cleaner than
some competitors but much more overpriced.

I would not expect a foreign concern to be sensitive
to traditional US values but they can and should be
squeezed on this matter
