One of the most ridiculous notions in society is that a valuable, negotiable document “protected” by a thin piece of paper and laid in an unlocked box at the curb is somehow “secure.” What moron believes that?
Many mailboxes are curbside, but even those on porches and gates are easily accessible to the public. I’ve even seen USPS drop boxes at PO branches vandalized with sticky glue at the box entrance to trap outgoing mail. So, what is guaranteed as secure when it leaves your hand?
I bring this up to point out the horrific mess that mail-in ballots present. Ballots are no different than negotiable instruments - CASH. They are essentially bearer bonds, which means that whoever possesses the instrument controls the intended purpose of it. The more distance and time that can be inserted between the legitimate receiver and the election processing centers, the more malfeasance is possible - exponentially more. Ballots can be “lost,” if they are deemed to represent support for one’s opposition, or “modified” if obtained in a “ballot harvesting” scheme. They can be stolen from unsecured mailboxes at will, and even from unscrupulous Post Office employees, which has occurred numerous times. (It is well conceivable that most PO employees are Democrats.). Whoever illegitimately possesses these stolen ballots has almost carte blanche to do with them as they please, with a virtually zero chance of prosecution for forging a signature, which likely won’t be checked anyway.
This is the stuff of fascist, banana-republic dictatorships. We allow mail-in ballots, ballot harvesting, and even “early voting” at our own peril.
I feel this attempt to continuously modify, extend, change voting methods is seriously unconstitutional. The upshot is that different states and locals are having greatly different standards for voting. Does your mail-in vote count when its mailed, or received? If the post office loses it or delays it, does it count? What if you receive 2 ballots? who handles your ballot, unknown to you or the state?
Unequal systems, applied inconsistently in different areas, obviously means unequal outcomes, and preventing unequal outcomes is the basis of the 14th and 15 amendments as well as the Voting Rights Act.
Vote in person like your life depends on it because it might.
The PO workers are NOT on Trump’s side, obviously, and the DNC knows which postal drops will be strong Republican. So, easy solution, just ‘lose’ half of the ballots that are from Republican areas.
About all the Republicans could do is drive to inner city post offices and drop their ballots there (off hours, of course, since if the workers see you dropping ballots, they’ll collect those).
Anyway, not practical. The ONLY other option is to not allow voting by mail, and instead have people drop their paper ballots at actual voting locations - which will at least have some level of security. Seems like an easy thing to do...but will the Republicans figure it out soon enough?

Not only that, I have it on good anecdotal authority (one friend who is a retired postal carrier) that insuring a package in the USPS is a red flag to the handlers/carriers that there is something valuable inside. You’d almost be better off to NOT insure a valuable item. Your best bet in that case is to send it Registered, which requires signatures at every transfer point along the way.
We’ve always voted at the Town Hall. I checked my card from the Bd of Elections and this year we vote at someplace that I’ve never heard of. I live in a rural community in NY state.
Try to send a gift card in the US mail.
Talked to our PW yesterday. Teased him about working overtime to burning ballots. But he is a good guy. He said not too long ago, mail persons could discard the widespread unsolicited crap mail w/o the recipient’s request. But now, for every piece he discards, he must log its description, why it was discarded, when, and by whom. (Obviously I think this could still be done w/o logs)
The USPS if let free will hand the election to Biden.
Tried that a couple of years ago. Never arrived.
