>there are no desk tops with built in sound

So, this is a desktop. I thought you got a new laptop.

You are right about needing external speakers with a desktop.

The most likely thing to check is if they are plugged into the right jack. It should be the lime green one. Also, make sure that the external speakers are turned on. Verify that you are using amplified speakers, if you are using passive speakers they may not be getting enough signal to make any sound.

Good luck, again.

Thanks. My speaker system has 2 prongs. One is lime green and the other is orange. The back of the computer has a lime green and blue. So I think my speakers are not compatible.

I did plug them in and messed around a bit—no joy.

I’m just going to research and read tonight, and deal with the rest tomorrow. First thing is to call Walmart and find out if I can take the darn thing back and exchange it. While exchanging, I’ll get new speakers.

They did not have a laptop that had the ability to play DVD. We use the laptop to take to the lake and play movies. So, I’ll have to do some more shopping for the lap top.
