Lincoln believed that if slavery were blocked from spreading into the Territories and that as those Territories were made States, slavery would gradually be eliminated, a sentiment shared by most Republicans. Most Democrats believed that too, and that belief spurred the Fire Eaters.

It was a trade-off that Lincoln was willing to make to preserve the Union, hence the proposals he made in his First Inaugural. Modern day Southern apologists have seized on this to claim, see the Civil War really wasn't about slavery, a proposition that we have seen is patently false. But, prepare for the next attack to come from the Left and the Cancel Culture to go after Lincoln, the man who signed the Emancipation Proclamation that we all now celebrate on Juneteenth, as a racist.
