Heres how the scam works: An SMS message is sent to cellphones with a malicious link, which prompts the user to submit personal data, the Sheriffs Department said in a Facebook post.
The information being sought can then allow cyber criminals to steal a persons identity, empty that individuals bank account or install malware on the cellphone.
According to a screenshot released by agency, the text reads, [Name], we found a package from March pending for you. Kindly assume ownership and confirm for delivery here: [link].
You should ignore any such message that you receive through text, authorities advise. They also warn people against clicking on any link that seems suspicious, and definitely dont provide any of your personal data. Its also recommended to block the number that sent the message.
The Sheriffs Department is encouraging people to share its warning with others, particularly seniors, who they say can be more susceptible to cyber crimes.

I never click on links from unknown sources.
You know its a scam when they say “kindly”. Nobody says that, but it’s in all the spam emails.
I received one this morning. Didn’t click on it, obviously.
I got like 4 last week on my phone. The first one intrigued me but I knew I didnt have a package from June. The second one came hours later with a different area code. Knew immediately that it was junk.
Hy hubby has gotten this SMS message 4 or 5 times now, but with different months.
Whoever ran this wasnt very smart. Lol.
What’s SMS?
I get them addressed to Claudia weekly.
