Lawyers: R. Kelly attacked by inmate in federal jail

R. Kelly was attacked by another inmate at a federal jail in Chicago, lawyers for the singer said Thursday.

The 53-year-old, born Robert Sylvester Kelly, was on his bed at Chicago's Metropolitan Correctional Center on Tuesday night when another inmate approached him and began to punch him, Doug Anton, an attorney for Kelly, said.

Anton said guards quickly stopped the attack and Kelly did not sustain injuries and X-rays revealed no fractures.

Lawyer Mike Leonard, however, said that Kelly sustained "very minor bruising" following the attack.

Another Kelly attorney, Steve Greenberg, said his legal team received "conflicting reports as to the extent of his injuries," citing difficulty communicating with Kelly due to restrictions on in-person visits in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Regardless, it is time to release Mr. Kelly," Greenberg said. "The government cannot ensure his safety and they cannot give him his day in court. We should not incarcerate people indefinitely because we cannot provide them with due process!"

Kelly has been held at MCC Chicago for more than a year as he faces charges for multiple sex crimes in New York City; Cook County, Ill.; the federal Northern District of Illinois; and Hennepin County, Minn.

He is set to appear in court Sept. 8 for a status hearing in the Cook County state's attorney's case in Chicago, which is scheduled to begin in October, while his Brooklyn federal trial is set to begin Sept. 29. Both cases face potential delays due to the pandemic.

Well, then he must have pi$$ed somebody off. Either he dissed somebody in the jail, or he dissed an inmate’s friend or relative in the street. Convicts hold grudges for years, and will wait for payback.

He’s in a lot of trouble :-) I wouldn’t be surprised if things have happened already that we don’t know about

the only thing he’s got going for him is he can pay for protection and I’m sure they jacked the price up

There was a pay-wall article I saw only part of, where his “allies” are trying to silence the witness by intimidation.

Let’s see how that works for him.

I don’t know much about the case. I was quite sure there was a lot more to it than one witness.

I could be very wrong.

It is quite rare however that a case will be brought to trial based on one witness. And nothing else

he’s got a million charges against him and a lot more than witness testimony to sink him.

good luck with that

We should not incarcerate people indefinitely because we cannot provide them with due process!

I agree with that statement. IIRC, he was supposed to go to trial in Feb and the prosecutor requested a delay until October. If a prosecutor is going to request an eight month delay before the accused has his day in court, he should be willing to accept the consequences of the accused being allowed to be free during such time. If not, then work some overtime, bring your case, and give the accused his day in court.

Had the defense been "stalling" and calling for the long delay, that would be different and he can sit in jail while his defense is formed.

“We should not incarcerate people indefinitely because we cannot provide them with due process!”

I agree. Process his genitals right OFF! THEN, EXECUTE HIM!

If you don’t know the R Kelly story, there are hours and hours of testimony of his victims and their parents on video. Including his wife and brother.

There is ZERO doubt that he is GUILTY on MANY felony charges on MANY victims. If there is justice, he will NEVER be free again.

After he is tried and convicted, I agree.

There is ZERO doubt that he is GUILTY on MANY felony charges on MANY victims. If there is justice, he will NEVER be free again.

Then try him and convict him. With ZERO doubt, why an eight month delay?

If you don’t know the R Kelly story, there are hours and hours of testimony of his victims and their parents on video. Including his wife and brother.

What I do or don't know is irrelevant. The constitution affords the right to a fair and speedy trial. We don't get to delay it indefinitely as a means of punishing the accused while denying their opportunity to defend themselves. The government should not just get to lock citizens up indefinitely without affording them their constitutional right to trial.

While our constitution may be inconvenient at times, it's there for a reason and there to protect all of us.
