Fire at Westlake chemical plant in wake of Hurricane Laura [Louisiana]

WESTLAKE, La. — Officials are saying that a fire has started at chemical plant in Westlake Thursday following Hurricane Laura, according to KPLC.

Louisiana State Police confirm they responding to the scene near Mile Marker 26 and motorists are advised not to travel on I-10 through Westlake.

Traffic on I-10 is being diverted to I-210.

A shelter in place order has been given for Westlake and Sulphur and residents are advised to turn off their air conditioning units.

Possible Chlorine fire as well as second fire in petro chemical area (a number of plants by Westlake, Sulphur and Moss Bluff. One has black smoke (oil fire?) and the other has gray smoke.

They still got power! I’m surprised. At least that is a good sign.

It was reported that many did not have power so that they did not have to worry about turning off air conditioning.

Someone may have restarted a petrochemical plant without adequate checking, and it went BOOM!

Gov. John Bel Edwards to give briefing on Hurricane Laura at 1 pm CDT today... May learn more at that time...
