After reading the article, my first impression is that this was self-defense. On the other hand, Rittenhouse wasnt from Kenosha or even from Wisconsin. He just showed up there with a rifle. I dont think a jury will look upon that very favorably.
(Yes, I know the radical leftists do the same.)

He lives 12 miles from Kenosha, that makes him a local.

Too bad TN folks can’t be summoned for WI juries. Put me on it. He was taking out the trash.

He is apparently a friend of the car lot owner.

If he had that rifle in Illinois, he has a problem there. He is too young to possess a FOID card. Cannot keep a gun without one. When I lived in Illinois, I left my guns in Wisconsin with my brother-in-law, I also purchased all my ammo there. The gun may have been in Wisconsin, if not, so what. It is not a crime to cross borders with a gun. Hunters from Illinois travel to Wisconsin to hunt every year.
Video is pretty clear, self defense. Even the guy raising his hands, he was still holding the gun. The kid had reason to fear for his life.
I doubt he will ever be a cop, even if 100% exonerated. Apparently he wanted to become a cop.

There are photos and video. And lots of them. Whether he was “supposed” to be there or not, it was self defense.

He lived in Illinois directly across state lines. 12 miles from Kenosha.
