I remember when this first happened probably 10 years ago. There was a case where some brat teen wanted to be “divorced” from their parents, took it to court, and the judge apparently granted it. Natural progression of America’s descent into moral bankruptcy.

Emancipation became more prevalent with child performers whose parents had signed contracts in their name that was heavily disadvantageous to the family. Of course some parents were financially mismanaging their child, leaving the child no recourse but to emancipate. Once emancipated, the contracts through the previous guardians were no longer valid and a new agent could negotiate a more favorable one and/or cut out a financially mismanaging parent.
