There are two proper ways to handle this sort of provocation. Unfortunately method #2 requires a special skill.
Method #1. Quietly ignore the demand. Just calmly go about your business. But have a plan if things suddenly get physical.
Assuming it’s not a lethal threat, I’d suggest police-grade pepper spray. Sabre makes a gel-like version. So there’s more change of hitting the bad guy, and less chance of spraying some innocent.
Method #2. If you know an exotic foreign language, speak that language if and when you’re singled out. And make wild hand gestures.
That’s a two-for-one. You will confuse the bad guys and entertain your companions.
Side story: A friend of mine and I were verbally accosted by a pushy street vendor many years ago. My friend suddenly starting speaking rapidly Croatian. It worked. The vendor walked away.
I would definitely raise my fist, but I would have a prominent index finger extending from that fist.

During this pandemic, it’s a luxury to eat at a restaurant, even eating “takeout” outdoors. (I just did it last week, after a medical appointment.)

Maybe since he was being threaten like that maybe he should have reached in his pocket and showed her what the second amendment was about after all with covid-19 spitting in some one’s face could be considered an assault.

second, if the blm/antifa people present get too provoked, say by a middle finger salute, then presumably the blm girl jumps the guy. in theory the guy can beat her which give her 5 or whatever BLM friends an excuse to beat the guy and his GF, but the video of the beginning of the assault would never see the light of day, only the guy going whoop ass at the blm shouter. if police summoned, they traditionally arrest the guy on the presumption that he started the fight (five blm witnesses might swear to it) and let the blm girl go because this is what police typically have done in the past (still true? dunno, might have changed).
