Islands do move, in a sense. The Hawaiian Islands have been formed as the Pacific Plate has moved southeast over a hot spot. Each island to the northwest is progressively younger.

P.S. In your prospecting, do you pan for gold. Trout fishing in Montana on the Ruby River I met a guy panning. The only thing I remember is that he told me if I want to try panning I should paint my pan black.
