Topeka mayor makes run for 2nd Congressional District seat official
Topeka Mayor Michelle De La Isla filled out the obligatory paperwork Wednesday to formally launch a campaign for the Democratic Party’s nomination for the 2nd Congressional District seat held by Republicans for more than a decade.
De La Isla, who doesn’t have a rival in the Democratic primary, was the first Latina to be elected mayor in Topeka in 2017. She was elected to the Topeka City Council in 2013.
Her personal narrative includes moving from New York City to Puerto Rico and to Kansas. She understands challenges faced by single parents. She graduated 20 years ago from Wichita State University.
In 2005, De La Isla moved to Topeka and became chief financial officer of Housing and Credit Counseling Inc. She worked as executive director at Topeka Habitat for Humanity and was subsequently employed at the utility company Evergy.
