I say power off but I'm pretty sure that the tv is already off, (except for the sound) because the remote wont change the channel and the back button wont work!
One time, instead of going black, the screen turned green?
(Don't remember if it kept the sound on that time)
I have a Verizon QIP 7100 P2 cable box.
I have run an hdmi cable from the box to the 2.1 hdmi port on the tv.
As I said, this is a Brand New smart tv and it is starting to display the same problem that my 14 year old Vizio tv had!
(That one went totally dark too but kept the sound!)
Nothing would bring the picture back though, not even powering off and on. (So I replaced it with this one) 8-(
I find it difficult to believe that this "less than a week old tv" would be going out!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
do you have a computer with an HDMI port?. what other boxes are hooked up? fire tv, dvd, soundbar. learn the button sequence to change hdmi inputs and try using a computers hdmi port to see if its the input or the tv. Change to another hdmi input with your cable box. Lastly have you updated the firmware?
Just over a year ago, I bought the Vizio 46" 5.1.4 Dolby Atmos soundbar. It sounded fine watching TV, but the first time I played a movie on a DVD one of the rear speakers started crackling a terrible sound during all the loud explosions.
I was frustrated that I spent $1,000 on the soundbar to have it do this, but I was too lazy to call Vizio about it since it happened so infrequently. Finally, last month I got frustrated enough to call Vizio customer support.
They told me the soundbar was just out of warranty (which I knew), and that they don't sell replacement single speakers. Then they went on to bluff me by saying the rear speakers are serial number matched and won't work with another speaker. I knew this was nonsense since they were connected by a wired RCA phono plug to the subwoofer. Finally, they said they would offer me a 25% reduction in price if I wanted to replace it.
I called a local music equipment/speaker repair specialist who said I could bring the speaker to his shop to check it out, but no promises. We opened it up, and to my surprise I found a screw that got stuck to the magnet at the back of the speaker. It must have picked up a loose screw on the workbench while it was being assembled, and the worker never noticed it. The screw would rattle when the speaker was producing loud volumes.
We took out the loose screw and reassembled the speaker, and it now works like it should have.

Same thing happened to me. It will be fixed by a firmware upgrade. It will happen automatically. Hang in there.
This has been happening to me as well and our TV is an LG. When in Pluto TV, it will black out, still have sound. I have to get out of it and get back in.
I had the same problem with an LG TV. I fixed it by replacing the old HDMI cable (from the cable box to the TV) with a new high performance cable. The old cable had worked fine with the old tv.
Are you adapting VGA to HDMI or using a rather long HDMI cable? That could be the problem, or it could be another problem with the HDMI cable. Could be noise from devices or other cables near the cable.
I’d check that first.
Back it must go. You paid for a set that works.
Vizios are pretty good sets — I’ve got my original flatscreen Vizio “Java” 26” streaming vids right now in the other oom — but I’ve seen two newer models lose their backlighting after a relatively few years of use. Probably not worth fixing, although it’s pretty do-able if you can get the problem figured out and if needed find the replacement part cheap enough.
Did you try another HDMI port? My Vizio has at least 3 of them. Some times the port can be defective. Since you can hear sound, the power supply to the TV is still working. I would assume the HDMI cable is still working as well since that carries both video and audio in digital format. If the cable is bad very unlikely that you will get audio but not video. Unfortunately, if this cannot be fixed, the repair will probably be to replace the circuit board. Given the cost of 50 inch TVs any repair may just not be worth the hassle.
Take the chinese crap back and get a Samsung.
Problem solved.
Return it; happened to my stepdaughter. After a few weeks, just quit altogether.
Sheesh...
1. Call their tech support.
2. Take it back and swap it for one that works.
Really?
Take it back. You got a lemon. Similar thing happened to me with a strip of screen on the right about 2 inches wide flickered. Sony 55” whatever.
Took it back and swapped for another exact model. Works great.

We have a Vizio 64in that did the EXACT same thing after about a year of use.
We gave up, put it into the box and in the garage it went.
I was cleaning the garage and asked my husband if I could get it out of there but then couldn’t bring myself to just pitch it and so I started reading...
Set it back to factory settings.
About 8 mos ago we did that and it’s going great.
1. Check for update.
2. Return it ASAP
...if a box acts up right out of the box, you don’t want to wait until you have to deal with the manufacturer - use the store you bought it at to trade it for another one.
I have a Samsung desktop monitor. It has gone black on occasion, and the solution has always been to wiggle the HDMI connector, or pull it and reinsert it.
Throw it out.
There’s nothing on.
Since it is within 30 days since purchase, return it from whence it was purchased. if it happens again with new unit, the problem isn’t likely with the TV. But it is very likely you got a defective unit.
