More public schools, which are supposed to be free, are charging hefty fees to reopen (Durham - $140 a week)

The city of Durham, North Carolina, plans to reopen public elementary schools this fall, but will charge a hefty fee. The surcharge is on top of the substantial local property taxes that parents pay to bankroll the schools.

Corey DeAngelis is the director of school choice at the Reason Foundation, a public-policy think tank. He slammed the Durham Public School District, saying its shameless move to charge fees is unconstitutional.

DeAngelis tweeted: “Durham is reopening public elementary schools as ‘learning centers.’ They are charging families up to $140 per child per week. That’s on top of what families already pay through property taxes. That’s unconstitutional.”

DeAngelis excerpted the North Carolina constitution, which says public schools are supposed to remain open nine months of the year and are provided free of charge because they get their funding through the taxes that parents and other residents pay.

New York City has also announced plans to provide child care for 100,000 children in the fall since it won’t reopen schools.

Why are New Yorkers forced to pay property taxes to finance public schools if teachers aren’t working?

I think they call that “day care”. I would only expect to see something like this from a nation that has totally fallen apart.

Property taxes?

Property taxes are used to hire some Democrat’s nephew for a do nothing job.

Do things for property owners?

Forget it.

In Maryland, it will cost $225 per week to send a child to a Y or, in one county, to an elementary school where people earning $13 or $14 per hour will help your child with on-line learning, supervise some physical activities and watch them eat the lunch that you send. In the county using schools (? ??) for this, your child can buy lunch.

Of course there will be money for scholarships so taxpayers will pay their school-supporting regular taxes, the $225 per week and additional taxes for the people who already don’t pay much or any taxes. Is this crazy?

In many places, certainly not all, the primary function of the schools is “to keep the kids off the street”. While in school they are a threat only to their teachers and their school mates, not the general public.

It’s almost as though they are shepherding the parents to home school or some other alternative to the government schools.

All schools should be funded by those who use them.

It would be revolutionary.

I thought that public grade school and high school WAS free day care these days, except it costs more and has more expensive personnel.

How can they get away with this?

At $140 per kid extra per week, for the price of 3 - 5 kids you could hire a full time private teacher / tutor.... That would probably actually be able to impart some useful knowledge to them rather than the leftist propaganda pounded into them at school.

I’d be working on impeaching the school board and protesting at the County Assessors office to get a Property Tax discount if I lived there.

the goal of most government unions is the conversion of the entire budget to wages, bennies and retirement.

the teachers unions are gutting the budgets for bricks and mortar for themselves

Its up the We the People...the only ones who can fix that mess

One of the things in the article is that teachers are apparently embarrassed about the room that they are teaching from. I would definitely provide an equipment and “studio” allowance to them, WITHIN REASON.
