Baker is trying to save his ass. Baker is a coward to the nth degree. Contrast his behavior to Nathan Hale's when Nathan was caught. Plus Nathan was engaged in the honorable profession of teaching, not the profession of a blood sucking parasite, otherwise known as a political lawyer.
