I used to fall asleep to Guns N Roses but I’m 52 now and I Fall asleep to early Beatles.
Absolutely worst REM song.
One of the allures of the left is utopian thinking. Woodstock. Age of Aquarius. John Lennon’s Imagine. That if we just allowed it, there would be an end to work and simultaneously abundance, there would be no violence, death, disease (especially no social disease), suffering, pain, remorse, etc., etc. Life would be one continuous party.
This goes against one of the fundamental doctrines of traditional Christian teaching, that we are fallen creatures; and, so, work - which should be joyful - is difficult, there are difficulties in childbirth and marriage, and, more so, there is death.
A generation ago, many people could be honestly confused about this. But, there is now a separation of the wheat and the chaff. There is no middle ground. You are either a god-damned atheist socialist, or you accept that we are fallen and must put our trust in God’s mercy. The other side is powerful and will, from time to time, win. But our victory is already won. We need not fear any man, nor prince, nor potentate.
Regarding the false Christians, many who cry Lord, Lord will not enter the kingdom of heaven.
Regarding R.E.M., lead singer/songwriter Michael Stipe, and guest singer on this song Kate Pierson of the B-52s, all very gifted artists.
This song always reminds me of Michigan Governor Whitmer’s shiny face. BTW, her doppelganger is Bruce Jenner.
Dennis Leary said it best:
And I also don’t go for this other thing now, with MTV being so big where you get a band that gets a hit video, and all of the sudden they think that they’re like icons and they can tell us how to feel about environmental issues and how to vote and stuff. You know what I’m talking about?
Like R.E.M.? “Shiny happy people—” Hey Hey Hey Hey Hey! Pull that bus over to the side of the pretentiousness turnpike, all right? I want everybody off the bus. I want the shiny people over here, and the happy people over here, okay? I represent angry gun-toting meat-eating f...ing people, all right? Sit down and shut the f... up, Michael!
Said to be (by its author) a “fruity pop song written for children”, it always seems very bleak to me.
