Ransom;

Thanks for posting.

Part of the problem with aluminum imports involves a large increase in government subsidised aluminum that China has been dumping on the U.S. In addition it was shipping their aluminum to Mexico, where it was mis-labeled as Mexican aluminum and imported to the U.S.under old Nafta rules.

Another problem with the “Mexican” aluminum is that it was stored in a desert enviornment, which resulted in a brittle product that could not be used.

There is more information here. Your post appears to confirm thatlevels of Canadian aluminum imports are acceptable .

U.S. President Donald Trump has re-imposed aluminum tariffs on Canada Thursday. The decision comes a month after his administration implemented the new U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement intended to lower trade barriers across North America.

The Trump Administration will restore a 10 per cent tariff on Canadian raw aluminum imports.

The White House defended Trump’s decision by citing rising aluminum prices in the U.S. that is hurting the industry. A weakened U.S. aluminum industry is a threat to U.S. national security, the Administration said.

Trump visited a Whirlpool manufacturing plant in Ohio where he said that “Earlier today, I signed a proclamation that defends American industry by reimposing aluminum tariffs on Canada. Canada was taking advantage of us, as usual.”

The Canadian government was swift to retaliate.

“In response to the American tariffs, Canada intends to swiftly impose dollar-for-dollar countermeasures,” said Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland in a written statement.

Freeland added that “Canadian aluminum does not undermine U.S. national security. Canadian aluminum strengthens U.S. national security and has done so for decades through unparalleled cooperation between our two countries.”

(Unless they are passing on mis-labled Chinese aluminum.)
