Disney is slashing the age-old theatrical window to ribbons: The much-anticipated live-action remake of Mulan is skipping theaters in the U.S. and debuting on Disney+ on Friday, Sept. 4 for an additional $29.99 fee, that is.
The news was announced during Disneys earnings call on Tuesday, our sister site Variety reports. Mulan based on the 1998 animated film and starring Liu Yifei as the titular girl who poses as a boy to take her fathers place in Chinas imperial army was originally slated to be released in theaters back in March, but was delayed due to the global coronavirus pandemic. A new premiere date was announced and then moved back several more times, until it was removed from Disneys release calendar altogether last month. (The film is still expected to premiere in theaters internationally.)
Mulan is one of the highest-profile theatrical films to go straight to a streaming service or VOD this year in response to the coronavirus outbreak, which has claimed more than 160,000 lives in the U.S. alone. The Tom Hanks-starring World War II drama Greyhound, once bound for theaters, premiered on Apple TV+ last month, while movies like Trolls World Tour and The Invisible Man became available on VOD months ahead of schedule.
Disney is upping the ante, though, with the hefty $29.99 price tag for Mulan. Other early VOD arrivals from major studios have been charging $19.99 at most for the convenience of watching a new Hollywood release from the comfort of your couch. But Disney CEO Bob Chapek emphasizes that this isnt the start of a trend: Were looking at Mulan as a one-off, as opposed to saying theres some new business windowing model that were looking at.
I was thinking that my daughter could invite 10 of her friends and charge 3 dollars. Dad of the year. Ha!
Oh you need to watch Aladdin and lion king. Exceptional!!!!
“I have heard enough about both shows to form opinions anyway.”
Hmm, I suppose you can form opinions that way, but I can’t see how they could be informed opinions.
I watch a lot of movies (older ones now...and older and older ones) but I cannot stomach television. Have never owned cable, and like you, that dates from about 1996-1998. Last time I watched a TV series was ER, probably the third season, and I recall watching Home Improvement, which I liked.
Now (and for some years) I cannot even be in the room with a television on. When my wife turns it on, it is my cue to leave.
So I know what you mean.
If I had kids, $30 would be cheaper than going to the movies. But my kids have kids...so I will make them pay for it, and then watch it with the grand kids. I am on a fixed income, ya know. Ha ha.
The main actress was all for Hong Kong cracking down on protestors, so yeah.
I never had seen the Mulan cartoon, and am not familiar with the story. But it sounds like it’s right in line with today’s gender bending sexuality. She’s a biological female, but pretends to be a boy, because at that time in history, only males could be in the military?
That particular storyline goes back at least as far as
Joan of Arc.
Not a bad idea..Have some pizza, drinks and a dessert and you really will be dad of the year
That part is true, but Im not sure about the pseudo homo stuff. I originally thought the SJWs were gleeful because there was going to be lesbianism, but I think it turned out to be what one character thought was a gay kiss.
Same here. If you dont still have kids at home theres little there of interest. Star Was movies and comic book movies are it. Neither interests me or my wife.
No one wants to watch Chinese Communist propaganda, except the Demonrat Party
In the original poem she joins the army completely out of necessity to spare her family and when finished goes back to a normal life. There is none of the I WANT MOAR trademark disney princess restlessness or grrl power elements that were shoehorned in later.
It will be on one of the free streaming services like tubi shortly after release. save your money
I will not spend $29.99 to watch a Disney film.
Although, I did just purchase a copy of “Gone with the Wind” on Blu Ray for that same price.
