Hurricane Isaias made landfall in North Carolina just after 11pm on Monday as local officials warned residents of life-threatening storm surges, flash floods, wind gusts of up to 85mph that knocked out power for at least 124,000 customers.
The massive system strengthened from a tropical storm to a Category 1 hurricane as forecasters expect it to dump up to 8 inches of rain along most of the Eastern Seaboard, which is under a tropical storm watch stretching from Georgia all the way up to Maine.
Preparations for the storm's arrival have been underway in major cities along the East Coast, including New York, where officials say Isaias packs the strongest punch since Superstorm Sandy from 2012.

Isaias? Really?
Who picks names for storms. Nobody can pronounce “Isaias”.
Yeah. We live in Wilmington NC 2 miles from Wrightsville beach and it was a non event.
Weather Channel had a crew at Wrightsville beach. I wish I was there.
Several house fires on Ocean Isle Beach
I have a buddy - a retired admiral - in the Jacksonville area and he said the same thing, “Hell, this ain’t a hurricane!”
No one reads the bible I guess. There’s a prophet who has a similar name.
Nothing Burger in the Raleigh area. Slept through it, didn’t lose a single branch, let alone a tree.
No big deal at the OBX NC. Rain started around 4 and minor wind. All over by 6.
Are the weather lords now going to force us to pronounce foreign names every time there’s a hurricane? “Isaias” Every last one of the local weather forecasters says it the new, mandated way. They didn’t all just decide it was a Spanish word and felt they had to pronounce it as Spanish. The weather lords must have included the mandated pronunciation with the announcement of the storm’s name.
So what’s next? Storm names in Arabic to honor America’s newest victim group? Names like Shauntavius and Towanda to honor our first victim group?
Isaias is Spanish for Isaiah.. It is the same prophet.
We’re looking at getting hit with it here in NH.
They are tropical storm warnings, and tornado watches. We’re going to be on the right side of the storm so winds should be extra fun.
They are only forecasting an inch and a half of rain, but where we are, we lose power very easily, like on clear sunny days with a slight breeze. I expect power to be out later this evening when it is passing us.
Right now the rains are on and off and the winds gust then die down.
VERY humid out.
Mr mm is checking the generator at the moment.
Hyped as disastrous and take cover for Bluffton SC. Another non-event, an hour of rain in the morning and a sunny afternoon at the pool when we were told to hunker down. As usual, Sun City closed at noon for safety even tho the cone had moved east and we were out if it. The hype is going to kill people. A hurricane warning here is becoming a joke and one day people will not hear a REAL warning and get wiped out. The HYPE has got to stop, it is worse FAKE NEWS Than CNNs. Shame in the local officials and SunCity management AGAIN!
Power is dicey in Red Hampshire...wait until winter...or your first ice storm. You’ll need that generator.
“No one reads the bible I guess. Theres a prophet who has a similar name.”
Yeah, but who can pronounce it?
I was hoping for a good soak for my lawn here in Florida. We barely got a few tropical showers and that was it. My neighbor did (stupidly) leave out a patio umbrella and that got shredded.
Yea,like I can pronounce all the names in the Bible.
Does it make me less of a Christian if I can’t?
not superStorm sandy??? Al Gore !!!
