Face it. It already has split up. What are the commonly held principles and values to form a unifying consensus? IMHO it was Roe v Wade that drove the nail that politically and culturally spintered America and has led to permanent divisions.

But today? We talk of red states and blue states, but that's obviously simplistic. It's not even possible to speak of an archipelago of progressive coastal cities arrayed against a much less densely populated inland empire of conservatism. The fact is that even small cities in America are significantly more liberal than the small towns and countryside that surround them. I live in an inner-ring suburb of Philadelphia that is heavily Democratic, but just a few miles from my house there are neighborhoods and towns filled with loyal Republicans. We are politically intertwined. That's the way a country is supposed to be — at least when those on different sides of political disputes don't hate each other.

This alludes to what I wrote a few minutes ago and this Marxist fully understands, it will NOT be a regional civil war, it's going to be almost individual on individual if it gets started. THAT is why both sides need to be warned by someone to whom they will listen to deescalate this as soon as possible or all hell is going to break loose and NO ONE is going to win. We will be forced to work with the people we hated in slave-labor camps by whoever takes over.

‘IMHO it was Roe v Wade that drove the nail that politically and culturally spintered America and has led to permanent divisions.’

you are correct in principle; except I submit that Roe v Wade was the nail, being driven by the enormous hydraulic jackhammer that is unabashed militant feminism...
