Wilford Brimley, who worked his way up from stunt performer to starring roles in films such as Cocoon and The Natural, has died. He was 85.
Brimleys manager Lynda Bensky said the actor died Saturday morning in a Utah hospital. He was on dialysis and had several medical ailments, she said.
The mustached Brimley was a familiar face for a number of roles, often playing gruff characters like his grizzled baseball manager in The Natural.
Brimleys best-known work was in Cocoon, in which he was part of a group of seniors who discover an alien pod that rejuvenates them. The 1985 Ron Howard film won two Oscars, including a supporting actor honor for Don Ameche.

Yes. My thoughts exactly.
He played old. I thought he was a lot older.
RIP

An under rated movie.
Agreed. And Joel Grey did a convincing job as Chiun.
He was also in “High Rode to China” with Bess Armstrong and some pretty much unknown actor named Tom Selleck. Funny as could be. RIP.
I liked him... But I thought he was 85 in ‘85.
IMDB posted trivia about the 1982 movie "The Thing" by John Carpenter.
It says:
Brimley was a real cowboy at on time. Fascinating life he had.
He was born old like Don Knotts, Abe Vigoda and Ernest Borgnine.
That means Brimley was only 50 years old when he played a retiree in Cocoon in 1985.
Remo Williams is one of my favorites. Too bad they didnt make a franchise out of it, like Rambo and Rocky. Dont expect to see it much longer. Joel Greys portrayal of Chiun wouldnt be allowed in todays madness.
HRtC is one of the movies I want with me if stranded on an island.
Anybody trying to wipe out Joel Greys acting as Chinese ought to be hoisted on their own petard by claiming they are actually being homophobic in their efforts to hide Greys performance. It might be highly entertaining to watch them try to dance around that charge.
Must’ve been a government employee, retired at 50.
I always liked him in his acting roles. No idea about his politics, and I like that too. RIP.
RIP. Another that guy gone.
Only 10 years older than Tom Selleck.
Still enoy ‘Remo Willaims’ when it pops up on a free stream...always thought the title was a mistake...people knew Remo as ‘The Destroyer’.
The Thing is my favorite role of his. Even better than The Natural, but I seem to YouTube The Natural scenes more often, better move overall.
