Wearing Black Lives Matter shirts, San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich and assistant coach Becky Hammon opted to stand while players and coaches on the Spurs and Sacramento Kings kneeled during the national anthem Friday night.
Popovich, who has long spoken out against racial injustice, explained he preferred to keep his decision to stand "to myself" and that "everybody has to make a personal decision."
Popovich's star guard DeMar DeRozan said people should not "vilify" either Popovich or Hammon for standing.

How sad that people must be told to not vilify someone standing for our national anthem. Very sad indeed.
Ah yes. Tubing down the Guadalupe.
A cherished life long memory that you’ll never forget!
Nowadays? Sheesh. Traffic everywhere, Parking a problem. Crowds. Stand in line to get in the water. No glass at all or you will get a ticket.
I’m surprised Popovich did that. I thought for sure he’d be the first to kneel.
I was thinking that might be a factor. He was not a rated officer, however, though I am not sure why not.
Yes, he is one weird Commie millionaire.
But now the ritual is to play the national anthem explicitly for the purpose of dishonoring it.
Do *not* try to get them to reform. Starve the beast by giving no money to professional sports. And yes that includes college sports.
I commented on a Fakebook Article about the Players wearing Jerseys with those BLM inspired Slogans. I called them Bumper Stickers on the back of multi millionaires.
It took about ten seconds for a guy named Kobie, I kid you not, to Post a reply calling me a Racist.
Scum.
2. He’s a U.S. Air Force Academy graduate,
I think, deep down, something maybe kicked in and stirred his memories of standing tall while at the Air Force Academy and active duty, and not exposing the hypocrisy of throwing that significant life accomplishment away.
I will say this, even though he is a crazy liberal, I’ll say kudos to Gregg...
I remember when Americans played in the NBA. Americans like Magic, Bird, Jordan, Stockton, The Mailman, The Chief, Hondo, Pistol Pete....
Just what I was thinking. It would be too hard on him to kneel. So he just stood there, like a PC puke.
As a society, we shouldn’t subsidize stupidity by dumbasses who get paid fabulous money (even league minimums) to play children’s games.
I wonder why he was not a rated officer? Most Air Force Academy graduates are. Maybe he was in training, and washed out. I don't know for sure. 🤗
B.S. degree in Soviet Studies and follow on training as an intelligence officer after graduation from the Air Force Academy In 1970. He likely chose a non-rated career field while a cadetservice commitment was, and is today, fewer years for non-rated v. fliers due to training.
