I lived in Ohio near Kent State shortly after this happened. There was a huge town/gown divide and the Kent State students, who were mostly from well-off families in Cleveland, despised the local yokels. This included those locals in the National Guard.
When information first came out about this, it said that the Guard was responding to gunshots fired from the student side....not the useful idiots in the front, who unfortunately got killed, but from some place behind them where the more radical group was egging everybody on. SDS was very active there. Of course, all this disappeared into the current narrative.
I have family (wife’s side) that lives in that area and can confirm what you are saying.
