Thanks. I didnt know that. There were heroes everywhere in those days.
By the way, I looked it up. I wasnt a plane accident. Howard was on the way to Portugal, and his plane was shot down by the Germans.
And Portugal was an interesting destination. The place was full of spies during WW II, both Axis and Allied.
Dang it. My post #42 contains an inaccuracy. Howard was not flying to Portugal. He was flying from Portugal, back to the UK. And thats when the Germans shot him down.
In the past year, I think we’ve lost the four most prominent centenarians, that I could think of: Olivia DeHavilland, Vera Lynn, Herman Wouk and Kirk Douglas.
I don’t know who is left.
Olivia’s sister and fellow thespian Joan Fontaine made it to the ripe old age of 96. They had quite the rivalry and were both up for best Actress in 1942 which Joan won in a bit of an upset over her Sister.
I wonder about that too.
My grandma was born and grew up while there were still horses and buggies, and lived to see a man on the moon, and even the beginnings of the internet.
She went to a one room schoolhouse. My own mother spent the early elementary grades in that same one room schoolhouse in the late 20s early 30s.
If someone lives into their 80s or 90s or 100s, they will be living in a very different world.
I wonder if technology will leave some of us behind. For example, a friend of the family, an 88 year old matriarch of her family, hardly ever goes online and doesn’t do e-mail. She doesn’t want pictures online, she like actual pictures printed out and placed in a photo album.
Technology is always changing as time goes on, and I wonder if some of us will be left behind. I myself am online a lot, but don’t do Facebook. I don’t do internet streaming such as Netflix type services; I just haven’t had the interest in learning about that. Who knows if other technology will come along that not all of us will participate in as time goes on.
I havent died. You havent died.
My go to for celebrities, https://www.deadoraliveinfo.com/ apparently has bit the dust.
My other source https://www.ihopeidiebeforeigetold.com/ shows Bill Pitman at 100 years old.
Wiki has a list of centarian celebrities dead and alive. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_centenarians_(actors,_filmmakers_and_entertainers)
Most of the names on the list are foreign actors or unknowns. 22 on the list are alive with the oldest Renee Simonot (Catherine Deneuve’s mother) at 108. Norman Lloyd at 105 is the oldest American actor.
They list as a celebrity, Ruthie Thompson, a Disney animator who just celebrated her 110th birthday.
We may have to wait for Betty White to turn 100.
Rhett said that Melanie was the most gracious woman he had ever known.
Yup, Joan Fontaine was a beauty, as well. She was fantastic in “Rebecca.”
“You know Leslie Howard, her husband in GWTW was killed in a plane accident during the War......I always heard he was on a secret mission.”
The airplane he was on was shot down by the Luftwaffe. All aboard were killed.
Portugal was neutral during the war, and EVERY country had spies there.

The last survivor of Hollywood’s “Golden Age”. May she, and it, rest in peace.
Nahhhh...
