Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and his wife, Mareva, met Saturday with two famous recent Greek citizens.

Mitsotakis published in his Instagram account the above photo, with Hollywood actors Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson showing their newly-minted Greek passports. “@ritawilson and @tomhanks are now proud Greek citizens,” Mitsotakis wrote..

The meeting took place on the island of Paros. Wilson, who is partly of Greek descent, and Hanks have long owned a house on the nearby island of Antiparos.

A US citizen can only hold dual citizenship if he was born in another country of US citizen parents. If Hanks was born In the US by US citizen parents, he would have to renounce US citizenship before obtaining Greek citizenship.

A US citizen can be a citizen of other countries as well as the US.Some countries don’t allow that,others do.I’m entitled to Irish citizenship but I haven’t put in the paperwork.But I might do so because I’d love to live in Italy.

Here (I think) are the facts:

1. Hanks is a big leftie (surprise!), but is not in-your-face obnoxious about it like Baldwin, DeNiro, and similar losers.
2. He converted to Greek Orthodoxy to marry his wife, and apparently regularly attends church (a leftie, but at least a practicing Christian, not a Scientologist like that other actor named "Tom")
3. His wife is Greek and Bulgarian in ancestry
4. They're both big fans of Greece and Greek culture
5. They were given (did not seek) Greek citizenship as an honor because of things they did that the Greek government regarded as services, something to do with helping victims of a fire.
6. They're now both dual citizens of Greece and the US. (Dual citizenship is not an issue for Americans AFAIK unless they try to get certain security-clearance jobs. "Movie star" is not one of them.)
