I’m worried that the Post has to use “bodega” in its lead. Are they worried that they aren’t trendy enough? Was there not a more imprecise word they could pick?

No, Nothing political about bodega. In NYC, thats what people elsewhere call a corner store. Also, this is a heavily Hispanic neighborhood, most of them from DR (Dominican Republic).
