She was Alsatian, from a part of France that up until 1945 was periodically traded back and forth with what has been Germany since 1871.
(One of the families in my ancestry was “Alsatian French”. The family story goes that, since they came over in 1868, they missed being “Alsatian Prussian” by two years, and “Alsatian German” by three. The Prussians occupied in 1870, the Germanic lands unified in 1871, Alsace returned to France in 1918, and reoccupied as the “Westmark” from 1940 to 1945.)
