Cal State University to require students to take course on ethnic studies, social justice

Courses on ethnic studies and social justice will soon be required for graduation from California State University after its board of trustees Wednesday approved a proposal to add such courses as a three-unit requirement in the nation's largest public university system.

After six years of developing a plan with a broad array of classes covering ethnic issues and academic studies, the trustees have approved the first changes to the school's general education curriculum in 40 years.

But some critics want a narrower focus only on ethnic studies -- not social justice -- which is part of a parallel proposal under consideration by state lawmakers.

The trustees have been at odds with the state Legislature on expanding the school system's requirements on making ethnic studies a graduation requirement.

The trustees' proposal is much broader than a similar initiative in the California Legislature, which would require California State University campuses starting in the 2021-2022 academic year to offer courses on race and ethnicity focusing on Native Americans, African Americans, Asian Americans and Latina and Latino Americans. Students would need to take a three-credit course to graduate. The state Legislature's version does not count social justice classes -- only courses focused on certain ethnic studies.

My daughter graduated from Sonoma State last year and had to take an ethnic studies course. She took one on Native Americans and went on a field trip to a casino.

So students have to throw their money into a sewer for a course containing less intellectual content than a 100 year old porn picture?

When are students going to grow some and tell the pretend university where they can shove their bull ****?

and to think our tax money is taken from us to support this kind of communistic indoctrination (and instead of providing meaningful, useful educational opportunities the classrooms are filled with this rubbish)

Just making an already marginal college diploma even more useless in the market place of ideas. Taking on an already indoctrinated new employee is a formula for unending unrest among the workforce.

Surprisingly, my Sonoma State daughter is the conservative one and she became more conservative in college.

Her brother who went to Texas A&M and her twin sister who went to the University of Alabama became very, very liberal. Her twin sister is especially liberal.

Branco nails it again.

Any university that requires this crap should be a red flag on a resume, although it may become hard to find those who don’t.

This was a requirement at CSU when I graduated in 1974. So why is it now being reintroduced and when was it dropped? I took American Indian Ethno history and learned that the different tribes were always at war with one another, forming alliances and stealing land (hunting grounds). Just like nation states throughout the world’s history. And, that most Indian deaths were a result of disease and not because of “ethnic cleansing” as was taught by the professor. Was there “war crimes”? Of course, but on both sides.
