I’ve found GoToMyPC to work well; I’m not tech-savvy, but connecting to a server through Citrix didn’t let me operate all of the programs on my desktop. GoToMyPC does that (you’re connecting to the actual computer, not the server), as long as the other computer is on.

Then you probably don’t have a decent company firewall. Meaning your security is completely up to the software you choose, and how you configure it. You’re about to make a really critical decision.

In what manner do you prefer that your office computer be hacked? Files copied, operation compromised, encrypted with ransomware, wiped of your data? Or would you prefer that those things not happen?

Remote access without a firewall, and without security, is like laying on the freeway at night, hoping nobody runs you over.

Axiom #1: When the product is free, YOU are the product.

In those circumstances where no firewall is available, or only a simple ISP-provided router, I use GoToMyPC. No, it’s not free. It’s worth the small price, IMO. And I configure it for maximum security.

Axiom #2: Security, or convenience. Pick ONE.

Good luck.
