What are mortars:
****************************

A mortar is usually a simple, lightweight, man-portable, muzzle-loaded weapon, consisting of a smooth-bore metal tube fixed to a base plate (to spread out the recoil) with a lightweight bipod mount and a sight.

They launch explosive shells (technically called bombs)[2] in high-arcing ballistic trajectories. Mortars are typically used as indirect fire weapons for close fire support with a variety of ammunition.

In the world of fireworks, mortars are the launching tube. For a basic bottle rocket, it’s usually a beer or coke bottle (or the launcher’s hand, since they’re pretty lame). For larger displays at the consumer level, the tube might be 1.5-2 inches in diameter. Professional-grade fireworks mortar tubes are pretty large. Haven’t been up close and personal to one of those, but from a distance, they look to be 3-5 inches in diameter and 1-2 feet tall (someone chime in here with better info, please).

Those pro-grade fireworks are quite dangerous if they explode near you. They’re designed for a show, not to shoot at cops. If someone aims one at me, I’ll shoot their a$$ in self defense.
