My wife’s uncle (the one she never met) was lost off Guadalcanal night of November 12, 1942 when the USS Barton DD-599, a Benson class destroyer, was torpedoed.

Read “Neptune’s Inferno” by James Hornfischer to get an idea of what the Navy went through at Guadalcanal.
