In 1969, songwriter and recording artist Wilbert Harrison released "Let's Work Together" amidst unprecedented social strife and racial tensions in America. The song was a clarion call to "every boy, girl, woman and man" to join the burgeoning social movements that promoted peace, justice and equality and a declaration that "Together we will stand, divided we'll fall." The following year, Southern California hippie blues band CANNED HEAT released their own version of the song, which became a major hit and amplified Harrison's call to action and unity. Now, that same band has teamed up with famed actor and musical interpretationist William Shatner for a much-needed revival of the spirit of unity found in this song.
"Let's Work Together" features a backing track created by the current line-up of CANNED HEAT, including longtime drummer Adolfo "Fito" De La Parra, as well as a special guest appearance by former member, and revered blues guitarist, Harvey Mandel. The musical stage thus set, Shatner joins in with a dramatic, passionate rendering of the song's lyrics, breathing a new life into the message.
The 89-year-old "Star Trek" actor proclaims: "This is a terrific song for this moment in time!"
Fittingly, "Let's Work Together" will be one of the centerpieces on Shatner's new album, "The Blues", coming later this year that will feature a constellation of blues, rock and country performers who work together with Shatner to bring the blues to life, including Sonny Landreth, Brad Paisley, Ritchie Blackmore, Pat Travers, Tyler Bryant and more courtesy of Cleopatra Records.
Saw him about 4 years ago in a steakhouse in Vegas. My gosh, his gut was YUGE! Probably hasn’t seen Little Captain Kirk in a long, long time. But probably one of my best celebrity sightings. As he left, he walked right by our table.
I always felt that was his trademark, that you didn’t really know either way. My impression of him, from various things I’ve seen, read, and an episode of the show American Pickers, was that he’s a genuinely nice guy who is respectful of his fellow man.
Even absent Shatner, this in not nearly as good of a cut musically or tonally as the original.
Kenny Edwards was the best bass player Canned Heat ever had. One would be surprised to learn of the major hits on which he was the bassist.

I can’t help but think ageing hippies must realize they accomplished nothing at all; if anything, they made things worse by attacking a culture which while imperfect, was the best system around.
No thanks. I hate hippies.
Beam Me up Scotty,
Nothing But Hippies!
Yes, many of them stayed losers throughout their life. Look at Biden and the Clintons and most of the aging tenured collegiate faculty. Some men, you just can't reach.
But if you read the stats, Boomers nowadays on balance are conservative Republicans. Look at Trump, and Roger Daltrey with his fringes and long locks from Woodstock was a big Brexit guy. This is what happens - as you age, you generally stop being stupid and become normal and conservative.
Millenials will stop being pod-eating snowflakes (you're already seeing it now) and grow up, too.
Where is Mrs. Miller when you need her?
One key difference between millenials and boomers it the number of millenials that won’t breed; the “future” means little beyond its impact on them alone. Anything beyond that is meaningless to them.
I understand why they are down about life in general; life for young people was a lot more promising 30 years ago than it is today. When I was entering the workforce, the mass migration of jobs out of this country was just starting; it is much more widespread now.
The Boomers did drugs and questioned authority, and that meant they would be lazy good-for-nothings....they wound up fueling the 1980s.
GenXers were depressed, self-indulgent and confused, meaning they'd never amout to anything good. So far, they make up a good chunk of Deplorable nation.
Millenialls may be eschewing marriage for now, and just like we still have loser Boomers and GenXers we will always have woke dopes. But I guarantee you, in 20-30 years these grown, matured Millenials will help elect the next Trumpian/Reaganesque President.
In 20-30 years, they will be a tiny portion of the electorate; the children and grandchildren of the foreigners we’ve been importing will decide elections in the future.
