My nephew died last weekend without leaving his wife the password to his Apple MacBook Pro.
Is there any possible way for her to hack the password or bypass it.
She believes that he has his original compositions and artwork stored on it that he has never shown to anyone.
I did not give her any hope but if there is a possibility I would appreciate any help.
My condolences also. Your comment about expecting his death tells me we should all have our passwords somewhere with someone we trust. Maybe scattered to a few trusted people.
If you dont trust anyone give them in a sealed envelope to your attorney to be opened on your death. Hopefully he wont snoop. Tack them in your will and keep that in a safe deposit box (inheritors can and will get access to a safe deposit box).
Surprisingly he died without a will as well.
He has had kidney failure for years and been on dialysis.
Refused to be on the list for a transplant.
You would think that he would have had a will.
Restart and Command + R:
Works if they didn’t set a firmware password. Otherwise you’ve got yourself a brick.
I dont want to speak ill of the dead. He may have been in some sort of denial. Dying is hard, obviously.
That said I am in great health and have everything all laid out. If you love your loved ones you must do this. It is an act of love.
So I just post to bring to our minds, write things down, have a password distribution plan, etc. have pity on those you leave behind.
And if you have not one decent heir do some good with your assets as your last act. Otherwise the state gets it.
Someone may be able to get the "original compositions and artwork" files off the hard drive without the password, but only if the hard drive is not encrypted. Basically, someone has to remove the hard drive from the computer, hook it up to another computer, and see if unencrypted files are accessible.
Best to have the job done by a professional.
They’re always popping in with emotional BS rather than addressing an issue with facts. People Like that are freaking, insecure morons. With ya, man!
Dont do anything with it until you discuss with FReeper Swordmaker. DM him right now.
Hes your best bet here (and I say that as someone who writes Apple apps for major 3-letter businesses).
I resemble that remark.
well, look. in the OS Crusades, I’m agnostic. I rather hate them all; apple people have joined a cult, windows people are all (every.single.one) suffering from abused wife syndrome at the hands of domestic violator bill gates, and linux people are just indescribably and irredeemably weird.
pick your poison. technology is the main show of modern existence, and someone has to punch your ticket.
but, peace, bro. my post was meant in good natured jest.
You seem to be an asshat. There are over ONE BILLION Apple users in the world and you call it a cult. Are you that stupid???? Apparently you are to call a good percentage of your fellow Freepers insult names just because of their choice of hardware. GET LOST!
My condolences for the loss of your nephew. The best steps to recover the data were posted by Freeper Attila_the_Hun in the following post:

Hes given step-by-step instructions on how to change the lost password for your nephews Mac data. These should work unless your nephew took extraordinary steps to protect his data (unusual). Let us know.
My apologies for the nasty comments from some Freepers about cult claims. They were uncalled for, and totally out of place. They cannot help themselves in their Anti-Apple bigotry.
I have iPhone, iPad, and iMac. Love Apple products!

Thank You for your assistance and kind words.
you just proved my point.
She believes that he has his original compositions and artwork stored on it that he has never shown to anyone.
Yeah, sure.
for reference, an acute persecution complex and extreme hypersensitivity are primary characteristics of the apple cultists.
. . . along with not reading an entire thread before wetting their dress over basically nothing.
Yet, YOU claimed you were jesting. BS, John. After over 20 years of this just jesting, Apple users are full up to here, of this Just jesting from your asshat kind who are actually bigots, who THINK you are superior, and can just come into an Apple thread and spread insults with impunity because its just fun to point at the ignorant rubes who use computer which you think are expensive toys.
By saying I just proved your point you think your claim Apples over one billion users are a cult and your bad behavior is somehow justified. YOU want to play the injured victim of my calling you out, when it was YOU who came into a thread in which a grieving family member was asking for assistance and you decided that was a suitable forum for your particular brand of tired, old snarky nastiness to be put on display, and when called on the carpet you could then hijack it to play victim???
No, you dont get to do that. YOU are the mis-behaving miscreant here. I read the entire thread. It was your myth based, snarky post, intended to denigrate the very people who would come to provide assistance to that grieving family that had no place here. I called you out for it. YOU deserved what I said.
YOU response went on to add a personal psychological profile ad homonym intended to belittle me (the typical fall back of someone who has no real adequate response or factual argument), and since your initial post condemned ALL Apple users, it was more than just personal to me, it was just more piling on of your initial egregious behavior, in the next post.
Are you a qualified psychologist or psychiatrist that you are entitled to make such a diagnosis to practice either of those disciplines based on a single post, John? Trust me, such behavior on Apple threads is NOT original with you! Have you ever even used an Apple product to have a qualified opinion on their merits?
NOW GET LOST!
Really????
John, your snarky post was the second response post on the thread to Pontiac, before any substantive or helpful advice could be offered. It was intended to be denigrating to every knowledgeable person who would offer help. It would also tend to discourage those who might be willing offer their assistance by insulting them right at the outset. How is that helpful? Hint for the terminally clueless: It isnt.
