CBS is aggressively stepping up its efforts to be more inclusive to diverse television creators and writers, setting a slew of targets for the 2021/22 season.
The broadcaster is committing 25% of its script development budget to projects from creators, writers and producers who are Black, Indigenous and people of color. The scheme will begin with the 2021/22 development season.
It is also mandating that writers rooms for CBS shows must be staffed with a minimum of 40% BIPOC representation for the 2021/22 broadcast season. This will be increased to 50% for the 2022/23 season.
Deadline understands that at least six new and current shows for this coming fall schedule are expected to hit this 40% mark.
It has also committed to additional BIPOC writers on select CBS series for the upcoming 2020-2021 broadcast season.
This is a major move for a broadcast network and comes as the Black Lives Matters protests have seemingly started to have a material impact on Hollywood. CBS is the first broadcast network in the U.S. to put in hard targets.
It comes as CBS has been improving on the diversity front. In 2017, a Race In The Writers Room study from Color of Change Hollywood highlighted that CBS and The CW were the worst of the broadcast networks with respect to Black representation in writers rooms.
The network has been becoming more representative in this regard in recent years with the likes of Dee Harris-Lawrence taking over as showrunner on All Rise, Aaron Rahsaan Thomas as showrunner of S.W.A.T., Gina Yashere co-creating Bob Hearts Abishola and Jenny Lumet co-writing the pilot of Clarice with Alex Kurtzman.
While steady progress has been made in recent years both in front of and behind the camera, change needs to happen faster, especially with creators and leadership roles on the shows, said George Cheeks, President and Chief Executive Officer for the CBS Entertainment Group. As a network with ambitions to be a unifier and an agent of change at this important time, these new initiatives will help accelerate efforts to broaden our storytelling and make CBS programming even more diverse and inclusive.
Boycott these assholes. Force them out of business.
Gee, I wonder why viewership is declining? /s
I'm tired of picking my way through retreads of retreads, all with obligatory gay, lesbian, trans sex scenes and anti-American themes. I don't watch any show with vampires, super heroes, zombies, professional assassins, chainsaw murderers etc. How about some original dramas involving real people, not freaks and weirdos; or maybe some genuine comedy that doesn't depend on kinky sex, anti-white animus or pushes liberal propaganda?
“White people need not apply. Change your name to sound black or Hispanic before submitting a resume.”
I say I am African American. It freaks the hell out of HR and the hiring managers. They look at me and cannot figure out why I put African American when I am clearly white.
During an interview about 5 years ago, I was sitting with the manager, and she kept looking at me in a funny way. She finally built up the courage to ask me why I put African American on my application. I told her I was from South Africa, therefore I am African American.
Needless to say, I didn’t get the job.
No room for meritocracy in CBS. Skin color is the only trait that matters to them so they can fill their arbitrary quotas.
All Rise is the lowest rated show for CBS on Mondays. The Neighborhood, Bob Hearts Abishola, and Bull bring more viewers to CBS than All Rise. Having Deadline using All Rise as an example doesn’t instill confidence that CBS knows what they’re doing. CBS seems desperate.
Yeah they definitely seem desperate. I wouldn’t be surprised to see longtime actors like Mark Harmon suddenly “retire” from their long running series during the next year.
Well, given that the country is still roughly 70% white, sounds to me like there’s some reverse discrimination going on.........#WhiteLivesMatter
Base on American sports and programming seen overseas they assumed that blacks comprised a majority of the population and that we are an apartheid culture.
Sounds like the writing will be as hideous as that approved of by the Union of Soviet Writers under Stalin. If you don’t toe the party line you will be shot.
First NBC. Now SeeBS.
ABC, you’re behind the curve!
Isn’t that racist?
That’s an outstanding comment.
Been saying that about the Spanish stations in the U.S. for years. Have no idea why foreign language sedition stations are allowed to broadcast within our borders. If most people (er, the American people) understood what they are saying on those stations, they’d demand the shutdowns overnight.
Rank discrimination against Caucasians should be more then pulling the licenses. It should also come with civil penalties and liability, just like they did to the companies that didn’t have X amount of black people or Y amount of Mexican people or Z amount of Asian people starting in 1969.
Back when they said there would never, ever be quotas.
One little side point: they can run all the shows they want using “ethnic minorities”. Who wants to watch? Certainly not most people, including a lot of the “minorities”. It’ll still be the bubble headed bleached blondes parading around in their skivvies - good luck trying to sell more Whoopi re-runs.
This is a major investment opportunity for someone who wants to start a production and distribution company that focuses on non-woke content (funny comedy, sit-coms and dramas that dont feature majority inter-racial and LGBTQRSTUVWXYZ, and majority POC cast) could make a killing selling to the 80% of the population who are tired of all the crap the leftys push.
Candace Owens is a great writer. They can give her a show.
Seventeen consecutive TV ads for me last night where the prime face was black. Many ads are also playing up the white woman with black child with fervor. Last night, a computer device showed a white woman holding a black child’s hand and there was a sentence written on the screen to let us know that relationship. Why?
And what is the recent fascination about black girls dressed as astronauts? Three ads feature that component.
Oh. You mean they are self imposing racial quotas.
WHO...is going to watch?
CBS went from being the most recorded shows in our house, down to ONE...Blue Bloods, and that will probably end this year.
GOODBYE CBS, it was nice while it lasted.
It is also running BLM ads during some commercial time slots during some Sunday programs, like the PGA Golf I like to watch.
“I cannot remember the last time that CBS has been tuned in to in our home. “
Same here. I know for sure it has been over 20 years. I’m thinking of ditching TV altogether. I am paying way too much for it. I could just get by fine with computer.
I think these networks realize the last people even watching network TV are certain (non-Asian) minorities and women.
