For a USA highway, I agree.
For actual off-road use? Not at all. Top speed should be 20mph, often 3mph.
A light, fuel-sipping, engine is king in that situation.

Hear, hear. When I introduce friends to off-roading in my 4Runner, one of the hardest things to get through to them is go slow. Less is more. There is almost never a need to gun the engine. If you do, you are likely doing it wrong. Heck, 4 lo in my car will *disengage* at like 18 mph...
What does Land Rover say? "As slow as possible, as fast as necessary."

For trails that are not tough sure, but you might need torque in certain situations and a 1.5 liter is just a little under whelming especially in a SUV Truck type vehicle.
I am not advocating a large big block V8, just 2.2 or 2.4 liter at least what they stick in Toyota SUVs
