I honestly feel like they discontinued it because they wanted and engine that needed to be occasionally repaired. Parts sales, and all that.
The Ford 300 CI straight six was indestructible...................
The first truck/car I ever bot was a Ford Bronco..was prolly that year in the pic.
Sounds like a good project, good luck.
Slow but pricey go.
The tub is the next big item.
It’s off and budget willing next month, send it off for sandblasting, some minor welds, and powdercoated.
The PC guys looked at it when they picked up the chassis and liked the condition it’s in and think the tub is very suitable.
I don’t need perfect, patch as best, some minor hard to see flaws I’ll live with or cover up.
My 2005 Ford Ranger 4x4 manual trans with 220K on it and still going strong disagrees...
An unpopular opinion here, apparently.
But they’ve never driver across a chunk of Africa with three other guys. Our biggest worry was running out of fuel between stops, even with two big NATO cans.
For trails that are not tough sure, but you might need torque in certain situations and a 1.5 liter is just a little under whelming especially in a SUV Truck type vehicle.
I am not advocating a large big block V8, just 2.2 or 2.4 liter at least what they stick in Toyota SUVs
“But tell me what the title of your book is — I will definitely buy a copy!”
“Three Jews and a Black Catholic Priest From South Africa Get Into a Land Rover in Kenya.”
Probably could be a book. But was just an adventure.
JL Wrangler Forum post #2 captures the attributes of the box perfectly, when a Guernsey has better aerodynamics in the tunnel.

Here is a sort of photo history. I’ve been slow to update the gallery.

I powder coat anything possible. The only way to go. Besides, I have no business painting anything.
Once the chassis is back I can start reassembling.
I never intended to go to this level but I kept finding things wrong and I watched way too much Monk. I also have a perfectionist uncle that has influenced me a lot.
Then there is the Wrangler Rubicon 392 press release the day of the Bronco introduction. A Wrangler factory offering with 392 cubic inch / 6.4 liter V8 for the purist off-road enthusiast.
High ground clearance limits the tow for the Wrangler, unless going for the Gladiator PU which can be had in an edition sporting 7000# tow. There is insufficient compression braking with current engines for hilly terrain.
In Europe/UK, the Wrangler is rated for 5000# tow. All trailers must have electric brakes, which may be the deciding factor there.
That photo array is professional and kewl. And you will put the 304 in it?
Glad you like them.
They probably help others with their projects. I document what I do in case it ever matters and what things went where.
304 is the plan now. Up until a few months ago, a crate I6 and turn in the old block. Dad acquired the 304 and decided he wasn’t going to use the motor.
I have the I6 block and some extra parts on CL cheap. Figure someone might want it for a core or some of the parts. It’s in the way where it is. I hate to scrap it.
You see Rangers, everywhere.
Just start looking at traffic and stop signs.
They’re out there....everywhere :-)
I want that! Very cool.
