Marine grunts in close combat formations will start receiving suppressors for their small arms at the end of this year, Task & Purpose has learned.
Marine Corps Systems Command on Thursday announced its intent to award a single-source contract to Knight's Armament Company for 5.56 small arms suppressors for use on the Corps' arsenal of M27 Infantry Automatic Rifles, M4 carbines, and M4A1 Close Quarter Battle Weapons.

Hearing protectors.
What’s a suppressor?
Hearing protectors.
Its about time.
Formerly and incorrectly known as silencers - they reduce noise but do not eliminate it entirely, like in the movies.
helps reduce the fog of war a little bit, which is a good thing, better control over your squad for sure. a bit more difficult for the enemy to figure out where you are. +++
Silencer
Small unit combat is being revolutionized by technology. Drones equipped with technology that can identify, accurately target and attack any living entity on a field of contention. It is far more important for grunts to have devices on their persons identifying them as friendlies than almost any other equipment. It will be hard to shelter or take cover on a battlefield against a technologically sophisticated opponent.
“The intent is to suppress every M4, M4A1 and M27 in the infantry community,”

Gosh! Just think how many of those precious $200.00 ATF stamps that’ll take! /s
It’s a good move, by the way. 100% agree
They take a bit off muzzle velocity and reduce the penetrating power of those little bitty 5.56 even more.
Yes, you’ll still have the sonic boom.
Wait until they fit them on tanks and artillery!
The crack of the supersonic bullet is very loud. Suppressors help with the blast noise, taking it down to about 106db from 118db, but 106db is still loud and still leads to hearing loss.
A suppressor is also weight. Grunts already have heavy weights. Suppressors also need maintenance and get real dirty real fast.
I just measured the sound at the range various weapons and calibers. Suppressors are good but their use really needs to be weighed against their negatives.
I have a suppressed .22 LR semiautomatic, and when I use subsonic rounds, the loudest noise is the bolt coming back. You’re like “did I just shoot this thing?”
It’s a muffler.
100 year old technology.
Limited use on the battlefield.
And - ps - they don’t work that well unless you have subsonic ammo.
Ditto what you said. Hand sized drones with a single .45 round finds the bad guys and places a charge between their eyes.
Why do you think so?
My reading, is, if anything, they increase muzzle velocity a small amount.
Essentially, the act much like a barrel extension, except compressed into a shorter length.
