Beatles.
CCR a close second.
Since solo artists/duos arent included I feel a bit limited.

Oh, wait. 50 years? That only goes beck to 1970 then.
Given that I would go with The Who or maybe Dire Straits.

A ridiculous question to ask. There is no One Group or Performer that is the be-all and end-all.
But, my choice to humor you is Aerosmith. And, it is based on one song. DREAM ON. That song is inspirational on so many levels.

The power and influence of Nickelback is unmistakable, but for sheer lyrical and harmonic genius one would have to go back to Ace of Base or Hootie and the Blowfish. Hootie’s dynamic range and singular brilliance as a bassist and accordionist, and triangle player are, in short, incomparable with any modern master composer/performer, including Kevin Federline and even Spandau Ballet.

Technically, the 50-year cut-off takes the Beatles out of the mix. Although each had an impressive career following their breakup, the magic and synergy was lost.
If you went with a 60-year cut-off, the Beatles would be my pick with CCR the runner-up.
