GW inquired:
Has anyone released, not the method of suicide, but the dead man’s [Marckesano’s] stated reasons?

I had not dug on that, grey_whiskers, until you asked. Presumably from what I have read, we are to infer that his distress over prior combat was in play regarding his decision.
Here are some more links to the story:

“...Many told Fox News that Marckesano never got over his tour in Afghanistan’s Arghandab Valley in 2009 with the 2-508, a battalion that had one of the highest casualty rates of any unit during the war. That deployment was like being in the ring with Mike Tyson for a year, according to the battalions former Command Sgt Major Bert Puckett...”
AND
“Green Beret Master Sgt. Andrew ‘Andy’ Christian Marckesano succumbed to the demons that haunted him after six tours in Afghanistan. Friends said that he was suffering from PTSD. This week he committed suicide. In Afghanistan, he served with the 82nd Airborne and the Ranger regiment...”
So very sad...and a huge problem for our heroes.
I would think that his previous battalion leader, or those at the Pentagon who hired him and those who recommended him and knew him, would have known something about his troubles. Articles say he was suffering from PTDS. Very heavy hearted about this.
