So if I understand this correctly, this author signed this letter because he or she thought it was a well-meaning message.

And he or she felt comfortable that some people she apparently admires also signed on for that message.

But then he or she rescinded support upon learning that JK Rowling had also signed on to this.

The message of the letter did not change because JK Rowling signed on to it.

This author is an idiot. The positive message he or she wanted to be a part of is still a positive message, even if people she does not personally approve of agree with her.

What am I missing?
