“once a living thing reaches about 35 lbs, it can not be a flying creature”

An interesting hypothesis.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_largest_birds#Table_of_heaviest_extant_bird_species

Domestic turkey/wild turkey Meleagris gallopavo avg 13.5kg (29.8lb) max 39kg (86lb)

I have to wonder?
Clearly Icarus and his father would have been over the weight limit?
Daedalus had incredible talent.

I remember seeing them in National Geographic back in the 70’s.

Before the flood, it didn’t rain, the earth was one big greenhouse. Everything was bigger before Noah and the flood according to some biblical scholars.

Bats aren’t marsupials. A rare exception in Australia, but....they can fly.

Those huge turkeys are likely the hybrids raised for meat. A friend had one that he kept for fly-tying feathers. A Broadbreasted Bronze. At two years old, it could barely walk much less fly.

Anything called a “flying fox” should me MUCH cuter.

Anyway, this is sort of a hoax of perspective, like the apparently 8-foot rabbits or 6-foot cats, or Gandalf being twice the size of the hobbits.

Flying foxes top out at about 15 inches from head to toe, despite the very long wingspan.

Oh crap, wrong again!
But I’m used to it.

At the link, they are listed as flighted in the rightmost column?

The face reminds me of one of our Australian Shepards?

And of course, our dogs are among the very cutest!

Wild turkey are flighted, but not great at it. They can get up into trees, and fly some distance if they start from elevation. Young domestic turkeys can fly. They’re bred for slaughter in their first year. They get pretty crippled up by their weight in their second year.

Would they eat the “fruitcake” people? Curious minds want to know.

Some have actually postulated that the ancient large flying creatures did exactly that. They were “gliders”. Of course, they were rather defenseless if they were on the ground, so the theory doesn’t really hold much water.

A better theory is that the atmosphere was thicker or the gravitational pull was less. And there is actually evidence for both.

“fruitcake” people?

I love good fruitcake and we make it for Christmas every year. With lots and lots of nuts, soaked in rum.

Is that bad?
Should I avoid telling people that I love good fruitcake?

Wild ones are pretty good at gliding. I can’t imagine getting too many turkeys in a helicopter, though. Still one of the funniest moments in TV, though.

"These bats are known to carry people off and suck their blood."

(Squeaky voice from a dark corner) "We especially like reporters."

"Right. Despite their hulking size, these bats are vegetarian and consume primarily fruit."

Wild turkey are flighted, but not great at it.

I watched a wild hen turkey teach two of her offspring to fly. The little family had adopted our neighborhood; she probably found secure nesting in the wooded lot at the end of our street. When I first saw them there were three poults, little balls of fluff following mama around. By the end of summer they were about two-thirds of her size still following her. One day as I watched them crossing the yards of the homes to our east, pecking up bits of heaven knows what, she suddenly took off and landed on the roof of the house next door, the only single story home nearby. The two youngsters, after a couple of failed attempts, barely made the edge of the roof. Later they all took off and flew to the deck railing of the house behind us.

That was the last I saw of them. It was fun watching them grow up.
