A New York federal judge has refused to dismiss Roy Moore's $95million defamation lawsuit against Sacha Baron Cohen, Showtime and CBS.
Failed U.S. Senate candidate and former Alabama judge Moore claims that Baron Cohen publicly slandered him by suggesting he was a pedophile in a prank on the actor's comedy prank show, Who is America?
Moore and his wife Kayla filed the suit in in September 2018.
Moore was duped into appearing on a five minute portion of the show, with Baron Cohen pretending to be an Israeli counterterrorism instructor called Erran Morad.
In the segment which aired in July 2018, Baron Cohen's character demonstrated a supposed pedophile detecting device that beeped each time it came near Moore.
The suit says the Moores are suing for defamation and emotional distress after being pranked show where he was 'falsely portrayed as a sex offender and pedophile'.
U.S. District Judge Andrew Carter denied Baron Cohen's request to have the $95 million lawsuit dismissed, AL.com reported.
The Moores are said to have warned Cohen and his production team at the time that if the 'offensive and defamatory interview' was aired, they would sue.
'We are gratified that the Court is allowing the Moores' case to go forward and we look forward to putting Cohen and the other defendants under oath,' said Moore's attorney Larry Klayman, a former federal prosecutor.
Klayman added: 'The alleged defamation of Chief Justice Moore was malicious and despicable and it is time that a jury of the parties' peers allow justice to be done. Great harm has been caused to my clients, which must be addressed and remedied.'

There were a hundred ways that this could have gone, without uttering pedophile. Cohen really screwed up. Even to get some negotiation going on and lesser money in the discussion, Cohen probably will have to cough up $20-million as a minimum. Pretty marginal joke for that much of a cost factor.
I’m no fan of Moore but I hope he wins big. Republicans/conservatives normally face all sorts of defamation.

If only ANYONE thought that Cohen was actually funny, he could have claimed that people knew that it was comedy and get the suit summarily dismissed.
I would imagine the Cohen lawyer is laying out the continued cost of this...probably eats up $60k every month. Cohen is wealthy but he can’t afford a $95-million situation.
I hope Moore impoverishes that idiot.

From what little I read from stories about accusations, Moore shouldn’t have been treated any differently from the many tycoons who have younger wives. It appears that he was lynched by jealous flying monkeys.
