Seattle City Council could make deeper cuts to Police Department budget than proposed by Mayor Jenny Durkan
Seattle Times ^ | 7/07/20 | Daniel Beekman

Most of the budget cuts that Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan has proposed for the Police Department were identified in response to the coronavirus pandemic - before Black Lives Matter protests surged in the city - rather than in response to police defunding demands made by protesters.

But City Council members will meet Wednesday to continue dissecting the Police Department’s budget and discussing additional cuts they could make.

Durkan proposed about $20 million in cuts to the Police Department last month, among other changes to Seattle’s 2020 budget that she said would address unexpected city spending related to COVID-19, account for diminished tax revenues during the economic shutdown and combat racial inequity.

Many protesters and organizations, including endorsers of the Decriminalize Seattle campaign, have demanded that 50% of the Police Department’s budget be redirected as soon as possible to other community needs, citing police killings of Black people and institutional racism.

Four council members - Tammy Morales, Kshama Sawant, Teresa Mosqueda and M. Lorena González - have said 50% of the Police Department’s budget should be redirected, and other council members have said they support reductions to some extent.

Will the socialists all have private security?

And they likely do not trust an armed citizenry. I guess that the openly lesbian mayor was not “woke” enough for these people, eh?

They “trust” armed narco-gangs, BLM and Antifa. Armed peaceful citizens, not so much.

What a joke, Seattle just passed a new tax on large Corps and high income individuals that will raise over 200 million PER YEAR. It will be interesting if leftist scumbag Bezos greases up and bends over and pays up or pulls Amazon out out of Scumattle.

By the end of summer, enough empty apartments in the downtown area will demonstrate that people don’t feel safe in the interior of the city. Cafes, bars, and restaurants will cite declining revenue. In five years, it’ll be another Detroit or Baltimore.

More likely the state will offer a bribe...er incentive for companies to offset what the city just did. State taxpayers screwed.

Great idea. I think it will work out excellently for them.

Maybe local citizens could cut deals with local warlords/militia leaders? They could pay tribute in monthly payments to be allowed to operate their businesses, etc.

There’s plenty of conservative areas in Washington. Every blue state has red areas. Just stay away from urban areas,be armed and you should be okay. Believe me. I live in Mexifornia. Basically for the weather.

In the northeast we have a situation where broke cities relied on wealth transfers from other areas that are also now broke; something has to be cut, and this reeks of the teachers’ unions trying to get out ahead of it with a preemptive strike. Here in NJ out teachers make huge sums of money for 180 days of part-time work, with no performance metrics or consequences for failure.

Seattle is on the way of becoming a no go zone where no sane person without private security will venture.

That's all they need!

Why not just close down the police department once and for all?

Maybe that is their ultimate goal, they just want to do it in increments.

“...tax...that will raise over 200 million PER YEAR.”

Estimates of how much revenue will be raised by this or that tax are always wrong. The reason is, they take the existing financial picture and add a percentage to it. THAT is the new estimated income. But that financial picture is predicated on the existing taxes. Studies have shown that when taxes are low people simply pay them. However, when people no longer consider the taxes low they look for ways to avoid the tax. Ordinary wage earners who have their taxes deducted from their paycheck have little choice over whether to pay or to attempt to avoid the tax. High wage earners have more control over what their taxable income looks like. They also have the financial wherewithal to take actions like moving their home or business to a non-taxed location. They have tax accountants and loopholes.

This is one reason why lower taxes often bring in more tax revenue. When taxes fall below the pain threshold people simply pay them rather than go to great lengths to avoid them. This has been proven over and over.

The leaders in Seattle are rapidly turning the place into Detroit.

“Will the socialists all have private security?”

Too late for that. The well-trained security guards have already been hired out. If the socialist/commie clowns are real lucky, they’ll find a fat mall cop from a temp agency.
