At the time, more importantly, Hedy and her friend created the electronic means for American submarines to finally be able to actually hit jap ships with those dang torpedoes...

Until then, runaway American torpedoes sank almost as many American ships as jap ships, although 50% of them just wandered away...

Sadly, but "War Department" typical, many hundreds or thousands of American lives were lost needlessly during the year and a half that she was ignored and ridiculed by the Navy brass because she was a woman... They told her she should stick to making pinup pictures for the troops...

Amazing that, even today, nothing has changed in the military bureaucracy...

She didn't invent a prototype of the internet. What she did was wonder if she could make communications harder to intercept. she used as inspiration the way that player pianos have holes that mark where keys are supposed to be played and she (and her partner) figured if they could spread a radio signal out across different frequencies that keep changing in some coded way, people could never get the whole thing unless they knew the code for which frequencies were being used at a given instantaneous moment. It also has the benefit of making it much harder to jam a signal (since you'd have to jam ALL frequencies ALL the time).

This is essentially a basic form of spread spectrum communications and that is the basis of many modern communications RF protocols including WiFi because it allows multiple radios to operate at the same time within a given segment of spectrum without interfering with each other since they are all always changing frequencies and hence all using different frequencies at any given moment.
