Can anyone here recommend good patriotic films that would be suitable for a family to watch together this July 4th weekend? I have kids that range from age 9 to 14. Thank you.
Ok film but very very poor history !
Conflates the stories of four incredible Patriots (Andrew Pickens, Thomas Sumter, Francis Marion & Daniel Morgan) into one story. So now we don’t have the hard work of honoring them we can be lazy and just think of Mel Gibson.
It also obscures the memory of Light Horse Harry Lee !.
“The Scarlet Coat” (1955, with Cornel Wilde)
“Johnny Tremaine” (1957 from Disney, when Walt still ran things)
Both are family friendly and patriotic.
My recommendation is “Shane”.... it includes a 4th july celebration scene.
“The Alamo” (1960)
“Wings” (1928)
“It is regrettable that in conservative circles, that work is giving short shrift has some kind of liberal fantasy. “
Really? Who thinks that.
Another conservative value is recognizing what you’re fighting for. That scene at the end where they’re at the tavern, the four hobbits sitting there having been stripped of their innocence while others are celebrating a pumpkin. Those are the small moments of freedom that we take for granted.
PS - I’m a critic of those movies but only because as they moved further from the books, they changed the narrative for the worse.
The thing that irritates me about that series was the frontier scout character played by Lloyd Bridges. Clearly that was supposed to be Christopher Gist, so why not call him that ! Why did they gave him a cartoon character name make him almost comic relief. He & his family made serious contributions to the beginning of the USA.
Don’t know why they did that.
Oh others suggested YOU TUBE - found George Washington the Mini Series (from 1984) there:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UoVCFt0HN9w starts you off. More parts are there on Youtube.
Absolutely wonderful series - covers GW from youngster til after the Presidency.
The Wings of Eagles with John Wayne is a great patriotic film, based on a true story. Good for all ages.
Slight correction Cagney with a C.
My choice Sargent York.
Also from Disney, two TV series:
“The Swamp Fox”
“The Scarecrow”
Uncommon Valor
“The Best Years of Our Lives.”
DON'T forget it...
Because they want you to.
DEFY THEM.
Independence Day, of course! When we kicked the aliens arses!
Yankee Doodle Dandy has always been a favorite of mine.
Yankee Doodle Dandy
Sands of Iwo Jima
The Patriot
The Five Sullivan Brothers.
