SEATTLE, WA - The Seattle City Council has taken a key step toward adopting a new tax on big businesses just two years after the council buckled under pressure from corporations such as Amazon and the prospect of a voter referendum and repealed a big business tax.
The council voted in a budget committee meeting Wednesday to advance a proposal expected to raise more than $200 million per year, The Seattle Times reported.
A final vote by the full council is set for Monday. The tax repealed weeks after it was adopted two years ago was expected to raise $47 million per year.
Dubbed "JumpStart Seattle" by lead sponsor council member Teresa Mosqueda, the new tax would target companies with many highly paid employees, whereas the 2018 "head tax" would have applied to all employees at large companies.

In last year's council elections, five candidates defeated opponents backed by big business groups. This year, the coronavirus pandemic and protests against police brutality have created a stir in local politics.
Under the tax, companies with annual payrolls over $7 million would be taxed based on their pay to employees making over $150,000 per year. As amended in committee, the tax rate would range from 0.7% to 2.4%, with tiers for various payroll and salary amounts.

Good! More reason for businesses to leave Seattle and make that city Detroit on the Puget Sound.
This should turn out well... /s
“$47 mil to clean up the CHAZ/CHOP/Biden rally zone?”
Nope, that was the amount from the previous bill that the city counsel buckled on and didn’t implement in 2018. 200 million is the new Bill. 300% increase in two years, further evidence the city is in the toilet. Hey Amazon, Starbucks, Microsoft..... what say you? This is just the beginning!
Talk about Chutzpah, they just told all citizens and businesses that the city and police force have no desire to protect or defend them or even the cities own infrastructure and they have the gall to raise taxes to pay more for the salaries and replacement infrastructure. If this allows to stand, the people if Seattle really do deserve everything they get.
Great expectations, but false. The reasonable expectation is that this government theft will drive out its victims, "big businesses", thereby yielding nothing.
Another death spiral brought to you by elected criminals.
exactly how does work??
for these taxes,
the officers’ homes will then be burnt to the
ground by savages.
then, after an occasional rape (with investigation
by Seattle’s very best social workers) no doubt
the companies will be most eager
to pay more protection money, taxes, donations, whatever.
Based upon the number of employees earning more than $150,000.....
Would that include the public school system?
Go for it Seattle tax the piss out them make them bleed and see how it works out
Boding, on the other hand, can use strategic bombing against the city.
Boding -> Boeing. Spill Czech failed me again.
So, Seattle wants to get rid of big businesses. OK, they’ll leave.
Yet another reason to hire H1Bs. And, that helps diversity, too!
First they allow and facilitate the takeover and occupation of a part of the city. Then they tax the sane ones, the good members of society, the ones who actually produce something. Then they take the money and give it to slobs who hate America, do nothing useful, destroy things, assault people and demand more money.
Keep Tacoma armed.
Every State that participated in this Unconstitutional absurd Lockdown should have a Ballot Initiative in November Reducing the Pay and Benefits of ALL PUBLIC EMPLOYEE’S by at least 30%
They won’t leave if the state give them tax bribes...er, breaks to stay.
That’ll likely be tried first.
‘Rats are real big on corporate welfare.
They just lie about it.
And the Seattle City Council won’t care. Likely neither will their idiot supporters.
“Hey Amazon, Starbucks, Microsoft..... what say you? This is just the beginning!”
In a way those companies deserve that and more.
They fed the alligator, now it is coming after them.
There used to be a company in So Calif that helped companies RELOCATE. Cannot remember the name.
They helped the company choose a new location-—move all of their machinery-—office equipment-—inventory—sell current buildings ——find new buildings——and assist employees in selling current houses & finding new ones, along with actual moving logistics.
Seattle will be come a ghost town before very long.
NO ONE wishes to be where they don’t feel safe at work or at home.
Why would any sane corporation remain in Seattle?
