Any Freepers have experience with Amazon Audible? (Vanity)

Posted on 07/01/2020 7:15:56 AM PDT by RoosterRedux

I am thinking about subscribing to Amazon's Audible but thought I would be wise to ask the opinions of any Freepers who might subscribe (or did so previously) .

I have read a good many books on tape over the years and actually kind of like it. As I get older, I noticed my eyes get tired of reading hard copy and I don't read as much as I used to.

And I was thinking that Audible might be the way to go.

Any advice/comments sure would be welcome.

1 credit will get you any book - I use the credit for the higher priced books and purchase the lower cost ones outright.

I have a vast Audible library. The selection from Amazon Audibleis probably the largest audible library in the world. I purchase the prime membership which gives me 24 credits fot around $230, with a year to use them. 1 credit usually buys 1 book. Once you buy it, it’s yours to keep. You have a year to use your credits. They also have 2- or 3- for 1 sales throughout the year. And, they also have books that sell for less than the price of a credit, so don’t waste credits on lower priced books. I normally use up my credits before they expire and renew them early.

It’s a great service and I love it, especially for long car trips or just background while I have to do various mindless tasks.

Sucks that it’s Amazon, but if you can figure out how to get Amazon Smile on Audible, then you can make them donate to Judicial Watch or the like.

I love the serviced too. I drive from LA to San Diego often and Audible make the time just whisk away.

I had suggested to them that whey should add a folder on their site to add pictures from some books like biography and historical books and such as there is lots to miss from not seeing them in a book.

They said it was a great idea, gave me a free credit but I have not seen anything come from that.

I hate Bezos’s guts. Love Audible. I was buying audio books from iTunes. I save a boatload of money. Selection is good and easy to use. I tend to look for longer titles that will last a month of driving.

It has more than audio books on it too; I’m able to buy back orders of various radio shows that I normally wouldn’t get to hear.

Back when the BBC Radio had actual good stuff on it, for example, or Big Finish if you like sci-fi.

I’m happy with Audible, and used it before it was Amazon. Now that so many books via Kindle offer Audible for the book, it’s even better.

I prefer to read books on Kindle, but listening to books has helped on trips. May I suggest the Return of the Native read by Alan Rickman?

I am not sure if you can use amazon.com/smile. If you can designate a good charity to defuse the Amazon ugliness in our culture.

My local library offers free audio book loans. That’s what I use and I highly recommend if you can get it.

Generally if a book is around 8 to 10 hours of audio the price for the book reaches the price of a credit. All books can be bought for a credit or cash. I of course choose cash for short stories. I just finished a 27 hour book for a credit.

All books cost one credit, there are no 2 credit ones.

With a little searching you can obtain many audio books for free. And of course they are also available to steal on bit torrent. But I personally want to pay the author and reader for their work, and frankly the Audible app works so well I dislike the klugey methods to off brand books.

I too use Audible. I like it, I listen to it at bed time I have to remember to set the timer otherwise I might drift off and have to back track, which is a pain.

If you have a library card, get Libby and Hoopla. Content is free.

Tried to cancel. Charges still showing up on my credit card 7 months later despite a lot of complaints.

What do you mean “set the timer”? Is this a timer on Kindle? Or a feature of Audible?

Look over the book selection first. I had subscribed years ago and got so great books. I resubscribed a month ago and their selection of books has gone down hill for me. But I don’t listen to fiction. History, biographies, autobiographies. I cancelled my resubscription after 2 months.

Our local library is connected to an online library app but they stopped offering library cards to those of us who don’t live in the city. But at the Audible rate, I can buy a card for 3 months credits and get all the books I want. It is like a library card though, you have to return the books. Audible you get to keep your download.

Pm me if you have any questions.

I go the same route you do with the yearly membership. Only wish they had a larger number of books for the year price. I’ve found some obscure books that I had been recommending to friends (The Lost Prince, by Frances Hodgson Burnett, Regency romances by Georgette Heyer, Brewster’s Millions by George Barr McCutcheon (only wish they had the Graustark books)). Revisit your childhood with the Albert Payson Terhune books, or Walter Farley. With the restrictions in numbers of books, I end up listening to favorites (like the W.E.B. Griffin military books) four and five times.

But on a book by book basis after the yearly deal. I’d like a larger yearly deal.
