Before February you had lots of choices, and we could have made several recommendations depending on your budget, experience level, intended uses, and your home state's laws.
But right now, today, if you really want an AR, grab the first one you see, and pay the outrageous price. If you can even find one.
Palmetto State Armory is down to only one PSA brand AR-15 in 5.56, so today that is your only choice. If you're mechanically inclined, you can buy a rifle kit from PSA that includes a fully assembled upper, a lower parts kit, and then buy a stripped lower. Then your options open up a bit. Only the stripped lower receiver would have to be transferred through your local FFL, the rest of the kit can be shipped to your door.
Then there is the matter of ammunition, red dot sight or scope, and ammunition.
Good luck, we're all counting on you...

few friends have bought Springfield Armory Saints and love them
If not at all, I would suggest something a little simpler to maintain with decent accuracy like a Ruger mini-14. Same round, same mag capacities same pray and spray effectiveness. It is cheaper and you can drop it in the dirt and still depend on it to fire.
Dick’s does not sell them, because they are Dick’s...
Had a RR Tactical Operator 2 with chrome BCG and 2 stage RR trigger several years ago. Sweet rifle. Sure wish I had put a life jacket on it in that canoe.
I would only avoid Olympic.
Thank you all for the great advice. I realize the timing is bad for considering such a purchase, but thought it was time for me to start educating myself. Fortunately, I live in the country and don’t think my place is particularly vulnerable to the sh*t storm at least for time being.
What is the difference between .223 and 5.56. I thought it was throat length.
Buy it from Dicks Sporting Goods.

Threaten Dick’s with looting and arson if they don’t Give you one.
Yeah, I know. But I’ll bet Dick himself has a safe full, and mags (large), and ammo.
Ruger AR556 is a solid affordable and reliable one. I’m a huge fan of how the front comes apart. Easy to swap out anything else like any AR. Hickok45, likes it and it gets the job done on the affordable side. If you want to spend money, there is a lot of high end stuff.

It is and loaded pressure.
Whatever you get, get some good glass.
You have been on FR for 20 years and haven’t made a personal page. You don’t even have a state flag showing what state you are from. Get a life.
